32 medical professionals and transportation personnel were trained today in the use of the Warmilu blankets. Our first session was held at the Social Security Hospital in San Pedro Sula. This hospital serves the laborers of the northern part of the country. 17 nurses and two transport personnel attended our morning training and were excited about being able to transport their babies in a warm environment.
After the training, our team was given a tour of the NICU. This unit places great value on keeping the unit's environment conducive to healing by keeping sounds and lighting at low levels, preventing the overstimulation of the babies. This was something they learned early in our NICU continuing education courses. The staff shared how much taking the STABLE certification course has changed their patient care practices. It means so much to understand the basis for why certain care practices are vital to infant stabilization and improvement.
Lunch provided the exposure to a long standing Honduran fast food chain; Power Chicken! No one does chicken, fried rice and horchata like Power Chicken!
The afternoon allowed some quality time with 13 transport personnel from COPECO, Red Cross and private hospitals. We held this training in the Casas Viejas Restaurant, owned by one of the Merendon Rotary Club members. The paramedics and first responders provided vital information about the challenges of transporting newborns and the resources that they have available to them. They were even kind enough to bring an ambulance to the training so Erin and Grace could really understand the environment they transport babies and their moms in. They gave great feedback to Erin concerning her portable incubator prototype.
All were engaged in the Warmilu blanket training.
We have learned to much this week and we hope to have been able to help others learn also.
Tomorrow is our relaxation and fun day. Stay tuned for all the excitement!
