Today our NICU team began to visit the NICUs, holding training sessions about the use and care of the Warmilu blankets. The morning was spent at Hospital Mario Catarino Reves, the largest of the NICUs in San Pedro Sula. 12 nurses and physicians attended the training, along with the Vice Director of Hospital Mario Catarino Reves, Dra Bessy Maldonado. Dra Heidi Farinas, lead neonatologist in the transition nursery gave the team a tour of all the areas in the hospital where a Warmilu blanket could be used. Patti noted that there was a totally different feel to the main intensive care area. Nurses did not seem as stressed and could explain the purpose behind the treatments they were providing. Much of this is due to the education they have received through the Rotary grant trainings.
The afternoon was spent at Hospital Leonardo Martinez. This unit is the smallest of the three main NICUs in the city. They have made the greatest strides in increasing their patient acuity level and using the STABLE course materials for continuing training and education. 7 nurses and physicians were in attendance at this training session. During our tour of the unit, one physician stated that the nurses have come to really care for the whole patient, singing to the babies, taking extra care in positioning and keeping lights and sounds low. It is evidence that they have come to truly understand the power their care has in the healing of their patients.
The final member of our team joined us this afternoon. Doug Stanley, current President of the Rotary Club of Farmville will be gathering stories of the impact the Rotary Train the Trainer grant is having in the hospitals. We all enjoyed fellowship time with the ladies of the Merendon Rotary Club at a dinner hosted by the club. Doug and current Merendon Club President Carol Herrera Vidal exchanged Rotary Club banners, which is an old Rotary tradition.
Tomorrow is another full day of training. It is truly exciting to observe the impact of the grant activities.
