Cerro Azul

We started our day with breakfast and devotions.  A theme from the devotion reminded us that we always see things through the lens of our experiences.  This forced us to ask ourselves if we can ‘let our relationships with each other be influenced by the reality that “behind every scar there is a story”?’   So with this in mind, today when we were at our mission clinic, we asked the important question, “Where does it hurt?”  This gave us the opportunity to get the reality behind the scars and it allow us to help them improve their life situation.  As an example, we did see a lot of developmental delays in some of the children but were compelled to search for the ‘rest of the story’.

The day started dark and rainy day as we drove up the mountain to Cerro Azul (Blue Mountain), Taulabe.  The roads were more than a little dicey.  We came to a nearly impassable section where rocks had to be moved in order to continue. Our bus escort, Fernando, sprang into action to help us through and Geovani carefully navigated the difficult terrain. Another challenge was that the power went out in the middle of the day.  However, that did not deter the team from fulfilling the mission as everyone was committed and determined to help the people of this community.

We saw God working today on several occasions. Two people shared their crosses today. Dr. Sue shared hers with a gentleman that got up from the table after an adjustment praising God for her healing touch. He said, “Now I have seen God today because I have seen you.” God was clearly at work blessing both of them.

Julia A. has always felt somewhat inadequate around children, especially if they were crying, but found herself in the warm embrace of a child that had been crying, and she was comforting. Even though they were separated due to a language barrier, they were connected by love and compassion.

This is the first time the Mountain Medical Team has visited this village in over 4 years.  It was an opportunity to see if the care provided in the past had any long-term effect.  Several team members commented that the patients they saw today were still benefiting from the treatment and education received during past visits.  There were several opportunities to care for the spiritual needs of this community as well and prayer provided spiritual and emotional support for many of the villagers today who were experiencing life difficulties.  It is quite evident that God is at the center of it all.

After a day full of many blessings from helping those in need and after listening to a rooster crowing about something almost incessantly throughout the day, we headed back to Alfredo’s house where there was also no power.  Despite the loss of power, dinner was still prepared and served by the wonderful ladies who care for us.  We were able to share a beautiful candlelight dinner, have our evening devotion and debrief the events of the day.

There were many blessings that God bestowed on the team.   It is a blessing to see the tight bond of love and devotion the families have for each other.  Though they may lack many things, they clearly have an abundance of love.   As it is written in God’s word regarding his commandments, “And the greatest of these is love.”
