A Day in the Life of German II: Dinwiddie Team Honduras Brings Aid and Compassion

Wednesday, October 16, 2024

The Dinwiddie Team recently embarked on a mission to German II, a small community nestled in the heart of Honduras. With a population of 280 inhabitants spread across 75 families, German II faces unique challenges, including limited access to healthcare and education. Our team of 14 dedicated individuals traveled to this remote village, bringing with them medical expertise, dental care, and a whole lot of heart.

Meet the Team:

 * Yolanda: Shared a powerful message about giving from the heart and seeing the beauty in others. She also observed the challenges faced by the community, particularly the numerous children under 5 and the families unable to afford necessary medical referrals.

 * Nareesa:  Noticed the community's resilience despite facing health challenges and instances of illiteracy.

 * Jessica:  Encountered a toddler with a concerning rash and possible infection, highlighting the need for accessible healthcare. Her experience underscores the importance of providing follow-up care and education to families.

 * Elvin:  Witnessed the resilience of the villagers, particularly an 8-year-old girl bravely facing a tooth extraction. He also noted the difficulty in performing dental procedures in the challenging environment.

 * Jenna Lynn:  Stayed back today feeling under the weather and was supported by Karen and Albita, demonstrating the team's supportive nature.

 * Chris:  Observed the stark reality of limited dental care, even for those in uniform. He also had the privilege of meeting a 97-year-old resident, offering a glimpse into the community's history.

 * Carlos:  Shared a deeply moving encounter with a young mother struggling to care for her 2-year-old child with epilepsy. His act of kindness in giving her his cross symbolizes the compassion and empathy driving our mission.

 * Dale:  Met the same 97-year-old man, learning about his sleep difficulties and unique way of resting.

 * Kevin:  Experienced a humorous communication barrier, highlighting the universal language of laughter and connection.

 * Evelyn:  Assisted with dental procedures, witnessing both the community's commitment to dental hygiene and the challenges they face in accessing care.

 * Shirley:  Was touched by the mother's plea for help for her child and the team's collective effort in providing care and support. She also praised Alvin's clinical skills in identifying abnormal blood pressure readings.

 * Alvin:  Observed the prevalence of normal blood pressure readings in this community compared to others. He also shared his ongoing challenge in accurately measuring head circumference in infants. Alvin also learned about how the children were learning about planting coffee and harvesting coffee in school.

 * Kim:  Managed the pharmacy with efficiency and grace, even with a large influx of patients. She was particularly moved by the children's spirit and enjoyed connecting with them through nail painting.

 * Billy:  Witnessed the strong familial bonds within the community and the dentists' tireless efforts. He also noted the children's enjoyment of simple pleasures like playing with a beach ball.

Shirley led a devotional about Ecclesiastes 3:11 He has made everything beautiful in his time.

We were challenged to view others this week through the eyes of a child. Look beyond the broken edges and see the amazing value of others.
